Returning to sport from foot and ankle injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are common among active individuals. Returning to sport from an injury can be a lengthy and difficult process depending on the type and severity of the injury.  As a podiatrist, we are trained in the diagnosis and management of several lower limb injuries including:
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Fractures
  • Shin splints
  • Heel pain
  • Achilles pain
  • General foot and ankle pain
When returning back to sport it is important the athlete is prepared for the demands of the activity they are partaking in. This includes a range of motion, functional strength, flexibility, neuromuscular control, and controlled pain levels. Most patients will have many questions about their recovery. Some of the most commonly asked are:
  • How long until I can get back to training?
  • How long until I can compete again/re-join my team?
  • If I play will I re-injure myself again?
Without correct rehabilitation from injury, the chance of re-injury or risk of a new injury can greatly increase. A podiatrist can give you honest and realistic answers to get you back to doing what you love, with the correct treatment in place.
